somedays i have trouble finding things to write about and today they seem to be falling out of trees into my lap....i was over at virtuallynicky's blog and she used a word that forced me to the dictionary....now that doesn't happen too often...but as god is my witness i didn't have a ghost of an idea what abseiling meant....come to find out it's UK-speak for rappeling....but it reminded me of the old shaw line which was something like the UK and US are two nations divided by a common language...although i've only been blogging for a few months i've been haunting newsgroups on line for a lot longer, and have seen several times when things have gotten a little crazy because of the different usages of english words...whether regionally in the US or with particularly UK vs US usage.....the best was on a golf group on usenet....a common golf item used in the US is a re-enforced bag with a handle on top and a tube on the bottom used to collect pratice balls after you hit them....well it's called a shagbag...now as a verb in the US that's used to mean "1 a : to chase after; especially : to chase after and return (a ball) hit usually out of play b : to catch (a fly) in baseball practice
2 : to chase away " however in UK slang it has an entirely different meaning....i give you the spy who shagged me well the mayhem that broke out on the newsgroup was a riot........
