[Now Playing: "Gaudy Night" episode one [link]]
It's been a slightly disjointed day....the crew here did get the door lock operational....took them a tad longer than they thought....but with the new owner and an almost new crew....who really has no history with the facility....that should be expected....and they are doing there best.... and besides it's just a slight inconvenience....being retired....and living a quiet life....my time if flexible....
Walked twice today....once to Big Lots and Aldi....picked up a couple more spices I didn't have....curry powder & chili powder....and 4 bottles of a retro style soft drink....and then Aldi....this time I remember the mushrooms....and early evening....got a bag of pretzels....at Ollie's....an excuse to walk....
While they were working on the lock....I looked out the back door and there were 3 pair of adult Canada geese...with 18 goslings between them....1 pair had 2, 1 pair 4, and the 3rd pair had 12....new record spotting for me....have seen pairs with 10 and 11 before....but never with 12....

The lock to my door is still "out of order"....they're having a expect come in to look at it tomorrow....the facility I live in just changed hands....and except for one of the housekeepers it's an entirely new crew....who have no "history" with the place....but they are making an effort....and they will certainly improve....besides the one thing I've learned in my 71+ years is that things happen....good, bad & neither of the above....things we have no control over....in point of fact the only thing  we do have control over, is how we react....because it is the only thing we do have control over....or rather we should have control of it....taken me a long time to learn  that lesson....
Besides the above situation....and an early evening walk to Aldi....and /usual forget my shopping list....I knew I had forgotten to get something I wanted....but for the life of  me couldn't remember until I was unpacking my purchases....and....dang....I forgot the mushrooms....oy vey....

I hadn't really planned on walking today....spent the morning online and watching "Dirty Harry" on the old boob tube....and had a look at the weather and decided that I would finally breakdown and buy a new cane....my fav is getting a tad shabby and the handle which broke a few years ago and I gorilla glued them are finally loosening up again....now while I don't need or use the cane around my rooms or in the facility....I do use one when I go on my walks....I sometimes take short cuts over grass and some pretty significant slopes and like the cane for stability....but I didn't want to walk with two canes so wanted a day when I was confident of my route and my feet and legs to head to Ollie's....s/cane....on the way back....I stopped at Dollar General for an ice cream....and ran into the guy who lives across the hall from me....he's on crutches...offered me a ride....which I took....more to have a chance at a conversation that the ride itself.....
When I got back to my rooms....my key card didn't work....apparently the battery is the reader had died....they couldn't find the right security key so I was unable to get in for the better part of an hour....and I had lost much of the advantage I had gained on one of the online games I play....but just checked again and the loss was marginal and can be recovered....
Haven't decided whether to walk tomorrow....USA network is airing a marathon of some of my fav NCIS episodes....and I should walk tomorrow....but weather is good for the next to days and Friday will do almost as nicely....

[Now Playing: Brahms "A German Requiem" [link]]
It rained here most of the day....stopped in the early evening....and I took a quick walk over to Aldi....I think I mentioned below that in the specialty section had found some imported Polish sausage from Warsaw....enjoyed it greatly....and decided to get another if there were any left....and there were so I have one in the freezer....
But other than that have spent a quiet day in my rooms....usually there is nothing to watch.....but today starting in mid-morning and running through late afternoon AMC aired 3 of the "Dirty Harry" movies....now quite often I'll just turn the TV to face the computer and more listen than actually watch....but today....actually sat in my recliner and watched the flicks....okay I did check my games and group during commercials....but just enjoyed taking it easy....it was quite damp....and that always effects my joints....in point of fact when I did walk although it was not raining but there was a mist in the air....probably due to heavy traffic on the street I live on kicking up the water from the wet roadway....

[Now Playing: "Sink the Bismarck"[link]]
Yes I know...."Sink the Bismarck" again....it is one of my fav flicks and is based on a book by one of my favorite historical fiction writers....C.S.Forester....he was the author of the "Hornblower" series....I've read every book....several times....and from time to time adaptations of the books can be seen in "Now Playing" above.....
On my morning walk I saw 5 mated pairs of Canada geese with some 20+ goslings total between the 5 pairs....hard to get an exact count....but saw 10 other adult geese....a pair and a group of 8....no little ones....I've seen this before....best guess is that they are last years hatch and have not found a mate yet....a year or two ago....don't remember exactly saw a similar gathering of over 20 geese....which I jokingly refer to as a singles' mixer....
Hadn't had the numerous sightings I've had in recent years so far this year as I've had in the past and really enjoy watching the goslings grow....and grow fast they do....
Rain is predicted to return earl tomorrow morning [around 04:00] and continue all day into the early evening....so will probably not  be able to walk tomorrow....but AMC is airing three of the Dirty Harry movies during the day tomorrow so at least there will be something to watch on the tube....

[Now Playing: "1776" the movie [link]]
I fully realize that "1776" is probably better suited for 'The 4th of July" our independence day and not "Memorial Day" which has it's roots in what was originally called "Decoration Day" and was observed in the North after the American Civil War to honor those who had died in service on the side of the North....and originally celebrated on May 30TH....until the early 1970's when to a Monday and declared a national holiday....but truth be told I'll probably play it again on the 4th of July....and for that matter any time I feel like watching it again...definitely in my Top 10 movies list....
Walked just before 10:00 this morning....just a few things at Aldi....and always check the section with specialty meats and cheese....so I piked one up and to my pleasant surprise I had in my hand Polish sausage....imported from Warsaw....I grew up in the Buffalo New York area....which had a large population of people with roots in Poland and Eastern Europe....and there were polish meat markets with store made polish sausage....in fact a friend of mine mother made her own sausage....and what you can find in our local food stores where I now live is a sad imitation of the real thing....and I intend to horde it....
I went to mix a dipping sauce I make with a ketchup base....my own take on a cocktail sauce....and realized I was about out of ketchup....so off to the pantry to get the backup bottle....oops....could have waited until tomorrow or even Tuesday....but was such a fine early evening and used it as an excuse to go to Ollie's and Dollar General....ketchup at Ollie's....and a cup of ice cream at Dollar General.....well I had to pass right by it on my way back to my rooms....

[Now Playing a mix of Mozart choral works[link]]
It's rained lightly on and off most of the afternoon and into the early evening but as I sat down to write this post as were used to say back in the day the rain was coming down in buckets....and the wind was rattling the windows in my rooms....we're predicted to have scattered T-storms associated with the rain but I haven't seen or rather heard any evidence of their presents so far....I just hope the scatter somewhere else....it would be fine by me....
Didn't have the need to  walk for any real reason other than I wanted to....so check the radar and had a "window".....mid-morning and when I walked out the back door was greeted by 4 mated pairs of  Canada geese and a whole "herd" of little fuzz balls....chowing down on the lawn outside the door....2 of the pairs I could see through the hedgerow....but not the kids....2 pair were on my side of the hedgerow and between the 2 pair there were 12 little ones....one of the pairs was keeping watch over there brood of 10 goslings....an average hatch is around 4 to 6 goslings....but a couple of years ago saw a pair with 12....except for a pair and 5 little ones I saw on a walk about 2 or 3 weeks ago....this is the first time I've seen such a large group....there's a pond maybe 30 yards from my backdoor....which the seem to have taken over.....so I may get the chance to watch them grow into young adults.....

Have been watching Star Wars episode I this evening....episodes I & IV or the only two of the ones I've seen {I-VII} that I actually will watch over and over....really have never got "into" the rest of them....
It's been an interesting day....being retired....I sometimes lose track of what day it is....and for some reason thought today was Saturday....oy vey....
Walked early....stopped first at the ATM to get some spending  money....and then to Aldi....the weather although overcast most of the day and a light damp was actually not bad at all....just picked up a few things for the weekend....as we have T-storms in the forecast for tomorrow.....and a early evening walk to Ollie's and Dollar General....with a stop at the Thrift Store....some pretzels, beef and bacon jerky....a bottle of Powerade Zero....and of course a cup of ice cream....and yes I had got bananas earlier at Aldi....
I was rummaging around my pantry earlier trying to figure out what I felt like eating a spotted a can of corned beef hash....have no guess how long it's been there....have no memory of buying it....but decided that might be something I could sink my teeth into....so opened it up....put a little into one of my microwave dishes and a shot of liquid egg white and nuked it....not bad at all....but next time....and there will be a next time....will try adding a little cabbage and some mustard in the mix....

[Now Playing: Bach "B-minor Mass" La Petite Bande [link]]
The performance of Bach's "B-minor Mass" is by Petite Bande....is with period instruments and with a very small group of voices....in other words done as it would have been originally....it has certain  transparency of the sound that I find quite pleasing....I enjoy listening to small groups singing/playing music of the Baroque period....almost as much as I used to enjoy being part of the performance....I had a CD of this particular  recording years ago....and was listening to a modern performance of the piece the other day by a modern large orchestra & large chorus....and missed the cleanness of the sound on the recording I once had....so tonight searched on Youtube and  there it was and will be bookmarked....
Have spent the day indoors....I awoke in the middle of the night with both of my knees singing the dirge they always do when the barometric pressure is taking a nosedive....they're a great predictor of heavy weather is on the way....it rained a little on and off all day....but just about dusk the heavens opened up and as we said back in the day "It rained cats and dogs"....with thunder and  lightning....but thankfully at a distance....no close strikes....weather is to be nice tomorrow....but the T-storms will return Saturday....Sunday and Monday's weather looks good....Monday being Memorial Day....and memories of two very different things....while in high school our school band marched in parades on Memorial Day....and took part in cemetery ceremonies  to honor the solders who had past....but the rest of the day as I grew up rural it was the day we planted the vegetable garden....one honoring the past heroes and the other in expectation of new life.....

It was a very pleasant day here....overslept....of course since I'm retired there is no penalty for such an occurrence....just a later start to the days activities....decided to walk to Aldi this morning....had thought about making the "loop"....Price Chopper and then Aldi....but decided to wait on Price Chopper for another day....although I was running low on the root veg which is an important part of my diet....the morning legs were a little stiff and thought the best choice was to just get the few things I needed at Aldi....the usual bananas, and fresh veg...tomatoes, radishes, and some fruit and grain bars...a a couple of other things....and intended to spend the rest of the day in my rooms and online....but it was so nice out....walked early evening to Price Chopper and the needed root veg....golden beets, parsnips, and wanted some cabbage but the heads were too big....so probably will pickup a head at Aldi later this week....but Aldi only carries green cabbage....and I prefer the  purple type which Price Chopper has only as I said the heads were too big....
I don't really know why but have not seen very many geese this year....usually by this time there are mom, dad and the little ones all over the place....and I've only seen a single pair with 5 goslings....????

I had no sooner rolled into bed last night that the heavens opened up and we got the T-storms that had been promised all day....didn't bother to get up  and watch but from what I heard, just as I had expect the bulk of the storm missed us and we just caught an edge of it....but a cooler day today but not bad at all....but with the barometer on the raise....my joints felt much better so decided to take a walk and help loosen them up....with is exactly what happened....just a quick trip to Big Lots and Aldi....
For the last few years I have avidly watched "Game of Thrones"....but really was disappointed with the direction of last years offerings and hadn't watch an episode this year....but like the person who starts reading a book gets bored with it and quits reading....and then reads the last chapter to see how it ends....HBO aired a re-run of the last episode tonight....so I watched it....after the build up of several seasons....the conclusion....frankly found it a little lame....and glad I didn't waste the time watching the rest of the episodes this season.....

It's late and I spent the better part of an hour trying to figure out why my math wasn't working out....finally I went back to the start and realized I'd made a simple mistake....I had miss read a number....copied it wrong....dummkopf....I am tired and have been less than 100% today....way less....with the T-storms coming the barometric pressure was falling and that always causes my joints to stiffen and ache....and I've been dealing with it all day....the funny part of the deal is that the wind shifted and the bulk of the storm missed us....we got some light intermittent rain but no as my daughter would have said when she was little " no bunder bunder boom boom ".....
But although damp and a bit windy....except for after dark....it was a pleasant day....walked late morning just around the grounds here to see if I could get my legs to loosen up a bit and it helped so....walk down to the Dollar General to get some beef jerky....and of course a small cup of ice cream....as I was leaving I heard a voice from the past call my name....it was a kid that worked the desk where I live a couple of years ago....nice lady....and we chatted for a while....haven't seen her since she left about 3 years ago....it's funny how things work at sometimes....I just decided to  walk at the spur of the moment....and we just happened to be at the same place at the same time....????....

As almost always happens....my original intent was to spend the day in my rooms....and maybe just at a walk around the grounds here in the early evening....which I actually did do....had a nice chat with one of the other extended stays....however....in the mid-afternoon....I checked the weather and it was just to nice of a day to leave it un-walked-in....but as I've said before....except on an evening walk around the grounds or a sit down on a bench outside....I need a destination....now I hate running out of anything....if it's something I use on a regular basis I always try to have a backup supply....and in the process of thinking about a walk I realized that my bottle of mouthwash....was less than half full...I use it every night just before bed....and if truth be told what I had left would have lasted me  better than a week....but it gave me both a reason and a destination....so off to Ollie's....but although I in theory I went for the mouthwash [which I did pickup]....did some browsing and found a cooper foot sleeve....I have trouble with both feet....among other joints that I've damaged over the years....miss used if you must know....if it wasn't from a sport injury, or a work related injury....or that sometimes I can be a bit of a klutz...but lately the knees have been more or less behaving themselves....back has been quiet....but my feet have been cramping especially at night when I'm trying to get some z's....so I put them on after I got back to my rooms....and wore them until my nightly shower....and feet feel pretty good....but tonight may tell the tale....but I am optimistic....because any improvement would be an improvement....probably will end up buying another pair or two....but will probably wait until it's a nice day....and I have no other reason to walk.....

It had not been my intention to walk today....forecast was for scattered rain showers....and although USA network is playing NCIS re-runs tomorrow....they're all post-Zeva episodes very few I like so probably wouldn't watch them anyways....but things change....first apparently my body decided that it needed more sleep than/usual....and instead of awaking between the usual 05:30 to 06:00....never awoke to almost 07:00 and also the rain was more scattered then constant....I awoke to a very nice mid-50's day....and also when I went to the lobby for my morning toffee coffee & cup of yogurt...there was a letter waiting for me....a bill for my 6 month checkup with the Doc last month....decided given the above it would be a good idea to deal with it today....but rather than putting a check in the mail....the office is less than a 10 minute walk, and the ATM is on the way....so just after 09:00.....up the hill  to the ATM to withdraw the cash for the bill....the Doc's and then Aldi on the way back....ATM check. but on the way to the Doc's realized I had forgotten my swing bag....rats....rather than go back...went to the Doc's....paid the bill....and then Aldi....and paid 7 cents for a plastic bag with handles....problem solved....than early evening thought that the nice weather shouldn't be wasted....ergo....another walk to Big Lots....and so I have my pantry and frig filled with all I need for the next 3 or 4 days.....besides when I checked the TV schedule for tomorrow while USA is indeed airing the episodes I  won't watch....AMC is showing "Draft Day" which I was surprised that no network or at least the ones I have access to didn't air it during the NFL draft a few weeks ago....on which the movie is based....an enjoyable flix....and one of the few Costner movies I actually like....and the 1st round of the PGA major tournament is on as well so probably will spend time watching that as well....but one can never tell when the urge my strike and I'll decide I need something or just need a walk....
When I got back from Aldi....and putting things away was having a problem putting things away....in the frig....and a 7.5 oz. can of Doctor Pepper kept kept getting in the way and won't fit with anything else so I did the only thing to do....popped the tab and drank it....plenty of room in the recycle/deposit bags....

I walked both this morning....left my rooms just after 08:30.... trip to Price Chopper on a quest for the elusive root veg....bet you thought I was going to say banana....originally I was going to swing past Aldi on the way back to my rooms but decided tomorrow would work out better for the quest for the "wild" banana....have plenty on hand at present...and then early evening just down the hill to Ollie's and Dollar General....needed nothing....except to walk....but as/usual a few items demanded that I take them home....the rest of the day has been spent quietly in my rooms and my usual playing online games and modding the FB group "The Farthest Side".....busy bay vetting new member requests....

When I looked at the extend forecast last night it was for rain and possible thunderstorms for Friday....it's now been amended to just the overnight an AM hours....but I didn't know that last night or up until 10 minutes ago when I as I always do check the current weather and the forecast before writing a post here....so last night made the decision to walk today....if you've read this slag heap before you know of my obsession with having a banana with breakfast....and would be out by Saturday....and wanted to avoid the walk on Thursday so as not  to interrupt my watching of the "marathon" of NCIS re-runs that will be aired tomorrow on the USA Network....but then today came....and I both physically and mentally I was not on top of my game....nothing terribly wrong....just a little below par....so decided to  postpone the walk and trip to Aldi until tomorrow....and then about a quarter to 16:00 i was trying and failing to concentrate on a gamer of solitaire and decided to lay down for a "few" minutes....which I did....when I rolled back over to  check the time  it was a quarter to 17:00....apparently it was just what I needed....and off to Aldi....it's right across the street....so I rather than stock a large amount of anything because the store is so close....so I'm in there 2 or 3 or 4 times a week....but normally first thing in the morning [they open at 09:00]....in fact the check-up girl asked me what I was doing come in so late....she's a good kid....but she was right....

The overnight continued until just afternoon and soon the clouds disappeared and we were left with a very nice low 50's sunny day....decided not to let it go to waste....and just out the backdoor and down to Ollie's and Dollar General....a bag of pretzel pieces, a bottle of Powerade Zero and a small cup of ice cream and back to the rooms....and except for what I had intended to be a walk around the lawns here....a trip to the lobby for a cup of coffee....was interrupted by a dash up the hill....okay....a slow walk up the hill to the ATM and some walk around money....after the detour back down the hill and the cup of coffee....besides that just a very restfully day....online and a little TV....thunderstorms are predicted for Friday and a 20% chance of rain for Thursday....so will take an inventory of my food stuffs tomorrow and determine when to again venture out in the never ending quest for the elusive banana....et al....truth be told I'll probably come up with a very plausible excuse....oops I mean reason to walk both days....there must be something, hiding in a store within walking distance that i need desperately but won't know it until I see it there on one shelf or another....

Although I knew from the forecast that today was going to be a very pleasant day weather wise....I hadn't planned on an extend walk....but planned a quite day....and maybe a walk or a sit-down on a bench on the lawns where I live....no errands....just a restfully day....
Hadn't bothered to check the forecast....a high blue sky with just a hint of clouds at the horizon....but being Monday....when housekeeping came in for their weekly cleanings of my rooms....it came up in the conversation that it was to rain tomorrow....took a quick inventory and decided I needed a few things before Wednesday....so took a short walk across the street to Aldi....just bananas, a cartoon of liquid egg whites, a bag of beef jerky and a dark chocolate candy bar....and somehow a package of smoked salmon ended up in my  cart....that kind of thing happens to me all the time....I guess I just have some mythical force that draws things I did know I needed into my cart....
As to the walk and sit-down never happened because this early evening my knees started to sing that off key dirge which they always sing when the barometer starts to fall as a prelude to impending rain....so a hot shower and a application of a topical analgesic....and decided that a walk was counter-indicated....so have just taken it easy....and although they're still singing but not as loud as before.....because of a possible interaction with my meds....I'm very limited as to oral pain meds....aka Tylenol....helps a headache but from long experience has no effect whatever on my knees....but by-enlarge they have been much better of late....weight loss and a healthier diet seems to have lessen the problem....to the point that I never us the cane around my rooms....well that's not quite true....I do use it to "fish" for things that have rolled under the bed or are out of my reach....I usual take one on my walks....but mostly just for show....

Was just a pleasant Spring day here is the Northcountry of New York State....I had really and truly not intended too walk today....among other reasons TBS was airing several of The Star Wars episodes....and really didn't need to run any errands....but the chance to walk with out having to wear several pounds of jackets and sweaters just to not freeze was to intoxicating to resist....decided to wear one of my high collar sweaters.....was carrying my sling bag and the strap if I have a full/heavy load....tends to press uncomfortably on my neck....decided to walk up to "Dollar Tree" and "T J Maxx".....just to look...and give me a reason to walk....did end up buying a few things at "Dollar Tree"....just some frozen food items....a couple of egg rolls.....a box of soft pretzels....and a couple of packages of pork riblets....things I can throw in the microwave if I'm in a hurry.....found nothing in T J Maxx....had to pass by Dollar General on my way back to my rooms and got a small cup of ice cream....just a very enjoyable walk....also walk just around the lawns here this evening....and spent the usual time online today....
If you watch the Holmes episode [link is up in Now Playing] and think the one actress looks familiar....it's Maria Sirtis....best know for her role as Consular Troi....this appearance was about a year before Star Trek Next Generation....

Although overcast all day....and a tad on the damp side was in the mid-50's and only a gentle breeze and although another cloudy day tomorrow temperature are predicted in the mid-60's....so probably will spend sometime out and about....
Was up just after 06:30....and as is my custom logged onto the free Poker site I play on....not a really great day at the tables but enjoyed my session....needed a few things t Aldi so walked just  after 09:00....on the way back I was crossing back over to the side of the street to where I live....in the crosswalk with the walk light and almost ended up a hood ornament....again....dang distracted drivers....they get a left turn arrow when I have the walk light and I've had a many close calls....and under NY State law....I not they have the right of way....oy vey....mid-afternoon I decided to walk again....other direction with no need to cross that very busy street....and in my travels pasted by a small pond where I had observed earlier in the week the male Canada goose on "guard" and the female sitting in the reeds....well today the two adults were out for a walk with 5 palm size fuzz balls in their wake....probably just a few days old....by fall they'll be all most as large as the adults and fully feathered for the flight south....but I enjoy watching them grow....for me a sure sign that Spring is upon us....

It stopped raining just have noon....but it remained a grey, damp, dreary day in the mid-40's, the only good thing about it was just a light breeze....but that being said....I needed to walk....not because of a great need for anything....but a need to get out of my rooms...and stretch my legs....in my younger years I was big time into sport....I played soccer, ran 20K races....a couple of marathons....and training ran usual about 75 miles a week and sometimes as much as 100 miles in a week....I've always lived an active life....and even though I am not physically able to exercise to that extend anymore....after all I am 71 and age and injuries from both sport and occupation have limited me....the spirit is still there.....or the old adage....."The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak"....so I walk....true a lot slow than I once did....and because of balance issues I walk with a cane....but I walk....went to Ollie's and Dollar General....and if a bag of pretzel pieces and a small cup of ice cream did pursued me to take them home with me....

I t had rained overnight and stopped just about dawn....but  the rest of the day was one of those grey, damp dreary days....mid-40's.....and as is their custom my knees were singing the typical off key dirge....not as loud as sometimes.....but just enough over the typical background level of pain to be just that a pain....but....as I've endured the problem for 55 some odd years....it's never stopped me from do what must be done and I'm not going to stop now.....so walked just after 10:30 this morning needed a few things at Aldi.....which could have waited until tomorrow afternoon or even Saturday....but I have found that if I sit around it really does nothing to alleviate the problem but walking does help....not sure how....maybe it just takes my mind off the problem....original was going to stop on my way back at the ATM....but decided not too....but then later....early evening decided to take another walk and went to  the ATM....the bank is right next to where my lodgings are....so it's not like it's a long walk....but I definitely feel the rain that's on the way....that's one benefit from bad knees....they are a great barometer.....
Have spent most of the day online and also watching "NCIS" reruns on the USA network....but the ones on now are some of the post-Zeva episodes....and I enjoy very few of those....

I had not intended to walk today....mostly because it had been predicted to rain all day....but first it cleared off for a couple of hours....and second....I got a little grumpy about something that happened today and just needed to get out and get some air....but when I walk I prefer to have a a purpose in mind....well more than just "blowing off a little steam"....to decided to walk up to  the Dollar Tree and T J Maxx....with no other purpose than to give me a reason for the walk....didn't need anything and wasn't looking for any thing specific....but as normally happens on walks like that I did manage to find a few things that I didn't know I  needed until I saw them on the shelf....
